The Kiel Area School District placed a referendum question on the April 1st ballot in an amount not to exceed $24 million for the purpose of district-wide renovations, capital maintenance, building infrastructure, systems, safety and site improvements; and acquisition of furnishings, fixtures and equipment.

The Kiel Area School District is asking the community to consider a referendum on April 1, 2025, to address critical facility repairs and upgrades across all three district buildings. This initiative comes after extensive community feedback following the previous referendum and aims to prioritize the most pressing infrastructure needs while keeping costs manageable for taxpayers.
Listening to the Community
The Board of Education has taken community input seriously and has revised the plan based on key concerns:
- The previous referendum cost was too high at $313 per $100,000 of property value.
- There is strong support for updating and retaining Kiel Middle School.
- The community wants improvements made to all three school buildings.
What’s Included in the Referendum?
The Board is proposing to borrow $24 million at a 4.25% interest rate to fund necessary repairs and improvements, with an estimated tax impact of $127 per $100,000 of property value including interest. The plan focuses on essential upgrades such as:
- Fixing the cracked and leaking foundation at Kiel Middle School.
- Enhancing ADA accessibility and restroom facilities.
- Removing mold and asbestos.
- Replacing aging roofs and HVAC systems.
- Upgrading heating, ventilation, and plumbing.
- Repairing parking lots.
Why This Matters
This referendum is a direct response to community concerns, offering a fiscally responsible plan that addresses urgent needs while ensuring that Kiel’s schools remain safe, functional, and accessible for students and staff.
